Quotation Marks(" ")

화자의 정확한 말을 시작하기 위하여, 다른 책이나 잡지에서 빌려온 말을 표시하기 위하여, 출판물의 제목, 또 어떤 말이 특별한 목적으로 쓰였다는 것을 보이기 위하여 쓰임.
Quotation Marks are used to set off the exact words of a speaker, to show that a writer has 'borrowed from another book or magazine, to set off the titles of publications, and to show that certain words are used in a special way.

 

직접적인 인용을 시작하기 위하여 쓰임. To Set Off Direct Quotations

 A noted sociologist recently remarked, You can say goodbye to your key rings. By the turn of the century, plastic cards that open electronic locks will be commonplace.

 

인용된 말 안에 다시 인용할 때 쓰임. For a Quote Within a Quote

I love reading Poe's The Raven'! exclaimed Sung Kim. My English teacher smiled proudly and said, Did you hear Mr.Kim say, 'I loved reading Poe's The Raven'?

 

Placement of Punctuation

Period나 Comma능 항상 Quotation Marks안에 위치한다.  느낌표나 물음표는 인용되는 말을 표시할 때는 Quatation Mark 안에 쓰이며, 주 문장을 인용할 때는 물음표나 느낌표는 밖에 위치한다. 또 semicolon이나 colon은 인용부호 밖에 위치한다.

I don't know,  said Albert. Albert said, I don't know.  John said, mom, will you zap me a cheeseburger? Did Ms.Wiley really say, You can tour an art museum on a computer? Fist, I will read The Masque of the Red Death ; then I will read The Raven.

 

특별한 단어를 쓸 때 사용함. Special Words

제목을 따올 때. To Punctuate Titles
