Apostrophe( ' )

소유의 뜻을 표현할 때, 복수를 말들 때 축약어를 만들기 위하여 쓰임.
An apostrophe is used to show possession, to form plurals, or to show that a letter(s) has been left out of a word to form a contraction.

 

축약어에서 쓰임. In contractions

Don't [o is left out]  she'd [ woul  is left out]  it's [i is left out]

 

복수 만들기 위하여. To from Plurals

A's, 8's, +'s, to's

 

숫자에서 생략된 말 자리에서 쓰임. In Place of Omitted Letters or Numbers

Class of '99 [19 is left out]  I'm fixin' to fax that first thing tomorrow. [g is left out]

 

단수 소유를 형성하기 위하여 쓰임. To From Singular Possessives

The world's population will double or triple by the year 2050. Did Mr. Strandberg's last lecture have to dl with endangered species?

Texas' resources (or) Texas's resources   boss's request [one-syllable noun ending in s]

 

복수 소유를 형성하기 위하여 쓰임. To Form Plural Possessives

Joneses' great-grandfather children's book'

The kid's custom-designed sneakers [kid is the owner]  the girls' wide-leg riding pants [girls are the owners]  boss's office [boss is the owner] bosses' office [bosses are the owners]

 

공유를 나타내기 위하여 쓰임. To Show Shared Possession

합성명사에서 쓰임. In Compound Nouns

부정대명사와 함께 쓰임. With Indefinite Pronouns
