As there is water on all sides of Australia, most Australians live within ten miles of the sea. Naturally they love water sports. With so many people in the water all the time, some of them often drown or are attacked by dangerous sea animals such as sharks. It is for this reason that young Australians have formed about 250 surf lifesaving clubs. They save those in trouble from dangerous accidents. More than 15,000 club members patrol Australia's beaches daily to make sure that people are safe in the water. Since 1906, when the first lifesaving club was formed, these club members have saved as many as 300,000 people from dying in the water.

Each year the clubs hold surf carnivals on the beach. The brown-skinned club members take part in different games and races just to stay in shape. These games and races also draw public interest in water safety. Thousands of fans come to see these carnivals. No money is given to the winner in any game, but the club members are eager to join the different lifesaving competitions. They compete for honor as well as for fun.

매년 구조대들은 해변 백사장에서 파도 축제를 개최한다. 갈색 피부의 구조대원들은 단지 건강을 유지하기 위해서 만이라도 다양한 게임과 경기에 참여한다. 이 게임과 경기는 또한 수중 안전에 대한 일반의 관심을 끌고 있다. 수천 명의 팬들이 이 카니발을 보러 모인다. 어떤 경기에서도 우승자에게 상금이 수여되지 않으나, 구조 대원들은 여러 가지 인명 구조 경기에 참여하기를 열렬히 바란다. 그들은 재미뿐만 아니라 명예를 위해서도 경기에 임한다.

Not all people, however, are allowed to compete in the games. Only those club members who are licensed lifesavers can compete in the games. These lifesavers must also patrol the beaches a certain number of hours each year without pay if they want to compete the next year. And each surf club has its own colored cap. The players must wear their club's cap during all the events. No one can win a race without a cap.

그러나 모든 사람들이 다 경기에 참여할 수는 없다. 자격이 있는 인명 구조 대원만이 경기에 출전할 수 있다. 구조 대원들이 다음 해에 경기에 출전하려면 보수 없이 매년 일정한 시간을 해변에서 순찰해야 한다. 그리고 각 파도타기 클럽은 각자 고유한 색상을 지닌 모자를 갖고 있다. 선수들은 모든 행사 중에는 소속 클럽의 모자를 착용해야 한다. 모자가 없이는 아무도 경기에서 우승할 수 없다.

Many kinds of lifesaving skills are demonstrated in the carnival events. The players may compete in saving lives with such simple old things as belts and lines. The most exciting event is the surfboat race. The surfboats are 26 feet long and each team has five members. At the start of the race, each team jumps into its boat. Four people row while the fifth person steers the boat and shouts encouragement. The teams race out about 450 meters and come back. The lifesaving sportsmen also compete in swimming and footraces along the beach.

카니발 행사에서 여러 가지의 인명 구조 기술이 선보인다. 선수들은 벨트와 줄과 같은 단순한 구식 장비로 인명을 구조 경기에 출전하기도 한다. 가장 흥미로운 행사는 서핑 보트 경주이다. 서핑 보트의 길이는 26피트이며, 각 팀은 5명으로 구성되어 있다. 경주가 시작되면, 각 팀은 보트에 뛰어든다. 네 사람은 노를 저으며, 다섯 번째 사람이 보트의 방향키를 잡고 힘을 북돋우는 고함을 지른다. 팀들은 약 450미터를 갔다가 돌아오는 경주를 한다. 인명 구조대 선수들은 또한 수영과 해변가 도보 경주에도 참가한다.

These events can be dangerous because the waves in Australia are often high. They can throw the heavy surfboats clear out of the water. The team members often have to try hard just to stay in the boat. High waves can send boats and bodies flying through the air. The lifesaving sportsmen find this very exciting and they love this excitement. Most Australians - whether they compete in the games or just watch them - find these sports useful as well as exciting. To them lifesaving sports are an important part of their lives.

호주의 파도는 때떄로 높기 때문에 이런 행사는 위험할 수도 있다. 그 파도는 육중한 서핑 보트를 물 밖으로 멀리 내동댕이칠 수 있다. 대원들은 보트에 남아 있기 위해 몹시 애써야 할 때가 자주 있다. 높은 파도는 보트와 사람을 공중으로 날려 보낼 수 있다. 인명 구조 선수들은 이런 것을 매우 흥미롭게 생각하며 이런 짜릿함을 즐긴다. 경기에 참가하든 경기를 단지 관전하든 대부분의 호주인들은 이런 스포츠를 흥미있고 유용하다고 생각한다. 그들에게는 인명 구조 스포츠가 그들 생활에서 중요한 부분을 차지하고 있다.

Tom    : Have you ever seen people save a drowning person?

In-suk  : No, I haven't. Have you?

Tom    : Yes. I know several people licensed to do lifesaving.

In-suk  : Licensed to save lives?

Tom    : You must be able to swim very well and give first aid to get licensed.

In-suk  : So are we not allowed to save drowning people?

Tom    : Of course you are, but you must be careful. I am taking a course in first aid so that I can be licensed.

In-suk  : Great. Can you tell me how to give first aid?

Tom    : Sure!
