Two Stories

이 글은 더불어 사는 질서를 어긴 두 사람에 관한 이야기로 이루어져 있습니다. 각 이야기는 주인공이 어떤 사람인가를 간단히 소개한 다음 일화가 전개됩니다. 주제: 1) 이기주의와 오만에 대한 응징(기차에서 옆 좌석에 자기 가방을 놓고 손님이 있는 척하던 승객이 곤경에 처함),         2) 더불어 사는 사회와 겸손의 권장(늘 자신의 학식을 뽐내던 학자가 정작 수영을 못해 익사 지경에 이름).

1. Suitcase

Mr. Jones likes being comfortable when he travels by train. So he always puts his suitcase on the seat beside him. Then he pretends that it belongs to another passenger who has gone to buy something in the station.	likes being comfortable : 편안한 것을 좋아하다. being comfortable이 like의 목적어임. passenger : n. 1 승객, 여객, 선객 (船客) ; 통행인 (passerby) ; 도보 여행자, 나그네 (wayfarer). 2 (집단 내의) 무능한 사람, 방해 [짐] 가 되는 사람; (운동의) 무능한 선수. ·The cabinet carries a few ~ s 내각에는 무능한 각료가 두서너 사람 있다. has gone : 뭔가 사러 가고 없는...
Jones씨는 기차로 여행 할 때 편안한 것을 좋아했다. 그래서 그는 늘 자기 옆 자리에 여행 가방을 두었다. 그리고는 그는 그 가방이 역에 무엇을 사러 가고 없는 다른 승객의 것인 체했다.

One day he did this when the train was very crowded. Other passengers came and sat in all the other seats except the one where his suitcase was lying. Then an old gentleman arrived. He looked at Mr. Jones's suitcase and said, "I beg your pardon, but is this seat taken?" "Yes," answered Mr. Jones. "A friend of mine is traveling with me, and he has gone to buy some cigarettes. He will return soon." Mr. Jones opened the window and looked out, to make the old gentleman think that he was anxious about his friend. "All right," said the old gentleman. "I'll sit here until your friend comes back, and then I'll stand somewhere." He put the suitcase up above him and sat down. Mr. Jones was not happy about this, but he wasn't able to do or say anything, because all the other passengers were watching and listening.

"~but is this seat taken?" : 이 자리가 누구에 의하여 이미 정해져 있나? to make the old gentleman think that~ : 노인이 that ~ 이하라고 생각하도록 하기 위하여 ( ~ 목적으로). anxious about : ~ 에 대한 걱정을 하는. above him : 그 사람 머리위 shelf(compartment). this : 노인의 행동(가방을 올려 놓고 앉은 일) were watching : 쳐다보고 있었다.(과거진행)

어느 날 그는 기차가 매우 복잡할 때 그 것을 했다. 다른 승객들이 와서 그의 여행 가방이 놓인 좌석만 제외하고 다른 모든 좌석에 앉았다. 그때 한 늙은 신사가 왔다. 그는 존즈 씨의 여행 가방을 보고 말했다. "실례합니다만, 이 좌석에 누가 있습니까?" "예,"존즈 씨는 대답했다." 제 친구가 저와 함께 여행을 하는데, 담배를 사러 갔습니다. 그는 곧 돌아올 것입니다." 존즈 씨는 그 노신사에게 친구를 걱정하고 있는 것처럼 하기 위해 창문을 열고 밖을 내다보았다. "좋아요." 하고 그 노신사는 말했다. "당신 친구가 올 때까지 여기 앉아 있다가 당신 친구가 오면 어딘가에 서 있겠소."그는 여행 가방을 그의 위(선반)에 얹고 앉았다. 존즈 씨는 이 일이 언짢았다. 그러나 그는 어떤 다른 행동이나 말을 할 수 없었다. 왜냐 하면 다른 모든 승객들이 지켜보고 듣고 있었기 때문이다.

Several minutes passed, the whistle blew, and the train began to move. Then the old gentleman jumped up suddenly and said, "I am very sorry, but your friend seems to have missed the train. We don't want him to lose his suitcase, do we? I don't believe he would like that at all." And before Mr. Jones was able to do or say anything to stop him, he took his suitcase down and threw it out of the window. Since then Mr. Jones has never used this idea again.

jumped up suddenly : 갑자기 벌떡 일어났다. seems to have missed : (기차를) 떨어진 듯 했다(기준시제가 현재이므로 여기는 과거시제임). took ~ down : ~를 내려놓다. threw it out of the window : it를 창밖으로 내 던졌다.

몇 분이 지나서 경적이 울리고 기차가 움직이기 시작했다. 그때 노신사가 갑자기 일어나더니 말했다. "안됐습니다만, 당신 친구가 기차를 놓친 것 같군요. 우리는 그가 여행 가방까지 잃어 버리는 것을 원하지는 않습니다. 그렇죠? 그가 전혀 그러기를 원하지 않을 것 같습니다." 그리고 존즈 씨가 그를 제지하는 말이나 행동을 하기도 전에 그 노신사는 그의 여행 가방을 내려서 창 밖으로 던져 버렸다. 그 이후로 존즈 씨는 이 꾀를 절대로 사용하지 않았다.

 

2. Professor Ology

Professor Ology was the first white man that had ever set foot in Africa. His real name was Dr. Jackson, but people remember him as Professor Ology for the following reason.	set foot : 발을 들여 놓다. as : ~ 로서 (자격) for the following reason. : 다음과 같은 이유로.
올로지 교수는 아프리카 땅에 발을 들여놓은 최초의 백인이었다. 그의 본명은 잭슨 박사였다. 그러나 사람들은 다음과 같은 이유로 그를 올로지 교수로 기억한다.

When he first arrived, there were no bridges, so he asked a young African boy to take him across the river in a canoe. In the canoe, he asked the boy if he knew any biology. The boy said he knew nothing of the kind. The white man burst into laughter, and said "If you don't know biology, you're hardly alive. One-fifth of your life is gone." After a few minutes the professor asked the boy again. "It seems that you don't know any biology, but you know some geology, don't you?" The boy said he didn't. "On, no!" the white man cried out. "Then two-fifths of your life is hone. Well, perhaps you've read some psychology?" Seeing the boy shake his head, the white professor laughed loudly and said, "Three-fifth of your life is gone. But I hope you've read some zoology?" The boy replied that he hadn't heard the word. The white man couldn't hold himself on the bottom of the canoe because he was laughing very loudly. "Four-fifth of your life is gone," he cried. He laughed and laughed till his shirt was torn and his hat fell off his head. Then the canoe rocked and rocked, and finally turned over.

The boy said he didn't : didn't 다음에는 know any geology가 생략됨. two-fifths = 5분의 2. couldn't hold himself on the bottom of the canoe : 카누의 바닥을 잡을 수가 없었다. fell off his head : 머리에서 떨어져 나갔다. rocked and rocked : 심하게 요동쳤다. turned over : 전복되었다.

그가 처음 아프리카에 도착했을 때는 다리가 없어서 어린 아프리카 소년에게 자기를 카누에 태워 강을 건너게 해 달라고 요청했다. 카누를 타고 그는 소년에게 생물학(Biology)에 대해 아는 것이 있느냐고 물었다. 그 소년은 그런 것은 모른다고 대답했다. 그 백인은 웃음을 터뜨렷다. 그리고는 "만약 네가 생물학을 모른다면 살아 있다고 할 수가 없다. 네 수명의 5분의 일은 사라진 것이다."   몇 분 후에 그 교수는 소년에게 다시 물었다. "너는 생물학은 모르지만 지질학(Geology)은 알 것 같은데, 그렇지?" 그 소년은 모른다고 대답했다.   "오, 저런!" 그 백인은 외쳤다. "그러면 네 수명 중 5분의 2는 사라진 것이야. 그러면, 아마 너는 심리학(Psychology)은 약간 읽었겠지? 그 소년이 머리를 가로 젓는 것을 보고 그 백인 교수는 매우 크게 웃으며 말했다. "네 수명의 5분의 3이 사라졌구나. 그러나 네가 동물학(Zoology)은 읽었기를 바라는데?" 그 소년은 그런 말을 들어 본 일이 없다고 말했다. 그 백인은 매우 심하게 웃었기 때문에 카누의 바닥에서 균형을 유지할 수 없었다. "네 수명의 5분의 4가 사라졌다." 라고 그는 외쳤다. 그는 셔츠가 찢어지고 모자가 벗겨져 떨어질 때까지 계속 웃었다. 그러자 카누가 흔들거리다가 마침내 뒤집혀졌다.

The poor boy, knowing that only one-fifth of his life was now left, swam for his life to the shore. Standing on the shore, he looked back and was surprised to find that the white man was still struggling in the river for life. He was crying for help. The professor couldn't swim and was drowning! The African boy shouted, "Professor! Do you know any swimology?" The white man cried helplessly, "No, I don't." "No?" cried the boy. "Then all your life is gone!" Once the professor talked as if he knew everything in the world. But he did not know one important thing that could save his life.

그 불쌍한 소년은 자기 수명이 이제 5분의 1밖에 남아 있지 않다는 것을 알고 필사적으로 해변으로 헤엄쳤다. 해변에 서서 뒤돌아보고는 그 백인이 아직 강에서 살기 위해 필사적으로 몸부림치는 것을 보고 그는 놀랐다. 그 교수는 수영을 할 줄 몰라서 물에 빠져 허우적거리고 있었다. 아프리카 소년은 "교수님! 당신은 수영학(Swimology)을 아시나요?"라고 소리쳤다. 그 백인은 절망적으로 소리쳤다. "아니, 난 몰라." "모른다고요?" 소년은 외쳤다."그러면 당신의 수명 전부가 사라졌습니다!" 한 때 그 교수는 자기가 마치 세상에서 모든 것을 다 아는 듯이 말했다. 그러나 그는 자기의 목숨을 구할 수 있는 중요한 한 가지를 몰랐다.

 

 

Dialogue

 

In a train a lady finds an empty seat beside In-su.

 

Lady   : Excuse me, but is this seat taken?

In-su   : Yes, it is. A friend of mine is traveling with me.

Lady   : Can I sit here for some time?

In-su   : He'll return soon. You see, this is his bag.

Lady   : All right. I'll stand when your friend comes back. Well, has he gone out of the train?

In-su   : I guess so. He wanted some fruit.
