Darwin’s Tortoise Dies at 176

A 176-year-old tortoise named Harriet died of heart failure on June 24 in an Australian zoo. The giant tortoise was believed to have been one of three tortoises taken from the Galapagos Islands by scientist Charles Darwin in 1835. Historical records, however, can’t prove it. Harriet was believed to be the world’s oldest living tortoise, and one of its oldest living creatures. "She is possibly one of the oldest living creatures on the planet and her passing today is not only a great loss for the world but a very sad day for my family,"said Irwin, the owner of the Queensland’s Australia Zoo.

Japan Begins Pullout from Iraq

Japanese forces stationed in Iraq began its pullout on June 25. Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi announced on June 20 that Japan would withdraw its roughly 550 soldiers, engaged in reconstruction and humanitarian work from their base in Samawa. The announcement came after British and Australian troops said they would transfer security responsibilities to Iraqi forces. Japan dispatched its troops to Iraq in 2004 and it was deemed one of the most ambitious and riskiest overseas missions for the Japanese military since World War Ⅱ. No Japanese soldiers were killed or wounded in Iraq.
