Boiled Eggs

Once a traveler stayed overnight at an inn. In the morning, he ate a large breakfast of bread and ten boiled eggs. When he was going to pay for breakfast, however, he found that he had very little money with him. "I'm sorry, but I didn't realize that I didn't have enough money. I promise to pay in a few days," he told the landlord. "Will you trust me until then?" The landlord said he would, and the traveler went on his way.

stayed overnight at~: 밤새 ~에 머룰렀다. a large breakfast: 푸짐한 아침 식사. pay for~: ~에 대한 값을 지불하다. had very little money with: 가진 돈이 거의 없다. in a few days: 수일 후에. Will you trust me until then?: 그 때까지 믿고 기다릴 수 있나? went on his way: 그의 갈 길을 갔다.

옛날에 한 여행자가 여관에서 하룻밤을 지내게 되었다. 아침에 그는 빵과 삶은 계란 10개로 푸짐한 아침식사를 했다. 그러나 아침 식사 대금을 지불하려고 할 때 그는 돈이 거의 없다는 것을 알았다. "미안합니다만 제가 돈을 충분히 가지고 있지 않다는 사실을 몰랐습니다. 며칠 내에 꼭 갚겠습니다." 그는 여관 주인에게 말했다. "그때까지 저를 믿어 주시겠습니까?" 여관 주인은 그렇게 하겠다고 했고 여행자는 자기 갈 길을 갔다.

When the traveler had finished his business in town, he returned to the inn and asked for his bill. Just imagine his surprise to fine that it was as much as five thousand dollars! At first he thought this was a joke. The landlord, however, meant business. "You ate ten eggs," he said. "If those had hatched, they would have been ten chickens. These may have laid eggs and hatched them. In five years, the amount would be five thousand dollars. Since I am a man of generosity, I won't count the days beyond five years. Now you owe me no more than five thousand dollars."

asked for : 요청하다. Just imagine his surprise to fine that ~:~을 상상이나 해봐라! 명령문. his surprise to + 동사원형 = ~한 그의 놀라움. to find는 surprise의 원인을 나타낸다. as much as ~ : ~ 만큼 많은. meant business : 진담이다. "If those had hatched, they would have been ten chickens" 가정법 과거완료. 예) What would have happened if I hadn't smelled the gas.(내가 냄새를 맡지 않았다면 어떻게 됐을까?) These may have laid eggs and hatched them.  may have + p.p는 과거의 추측으로 ~ 했을 것이다. a man of generosity =  a generous man. the days beyond five years : 5년 이후의 날들 no more than = only : 겨우~ ~에 지나지 않는.

그 여행자는 도시에서 용무를 마치고 여관으로 돌아와 그의 계산서를 요구했다. 그것이 5,000달러나 되는 것을 알고 그가 얼마나 놀랐을지 상상만이라도 해봐라! 처음에 그는 그것이 농담이라고 생각했다. 그러나 그 여관 주인은 진담이었다. "당신은 계란을 10개 먹었지요." 그는 말했다. "만약 그것들이 부화했다면 10마리의 닭이 되었을 것이고 그것들은 알을 낳고 부화시켰을 것입니다. 5년 이내에 그 금액은 5,000달러가 될 것입니다. 나는 관대한 사람이기 때문에 5년 이후의 날은 계산하지 않겠습니다. 이제 당신은 5,000달러만 내시면 됩니다.

The traveler could not pay such a huge bill, nor did he want to. He was told to appear before the judge to defend himself for not paying the debt. He told his whole story to a lawyer. He agreed to help him out. On the day of the trial, the traveler and the landlord appeared in court in time. The lawyer, however, did not show up on time. They waited and waited until he finally came into the courtroom nearly an hour late.

such a huge bill : 그렇게 많은 돈 ~ nor : ~ 도 역시 아니다. to appear before the judge : 판사 앞에 출두 하다. a lawyer : 변호사. help ~ out : 곤경에서 ~ 를 해주다. in time : 제시간에, 시간을 맞추어. nearly an hour late : 거의 한시간 늦게.

여행자는 그렇게 많은 돈을 지불할 수도 없었고 그러고 싶지도 않았다. 그는 빛을 갚지 않은 데 대해 그 자신을 변호하기 위해 판사 앞에 출두하라는 명령을 받았다. 그는 한 변호사에게 자신의 이야기를 다 털어 놓았다. 그 변호사는 그를 도와주기로 동의했다. 재판이 있는 날 그 여행자와 여관주인은 시간에 맞추어 법정에 나타났다. 그러나 변호사는 정각에도 나타나지 않았다. 그들은 기다리고 또 기다렸다. 마침내 한 시간 가량 늦게 그가 법정에 나타났다.

"How come you were late for the trial?" the judge asked him sternly. "I'm very sorry," he said. "I was held up harvesting my cornfield." "Harvesting your cornfields?" asked the judge curiously. "The corn is not ripe yet." "Of course not," said the lawyer. "I had sowed two bags of boiled corn. I thought it would be ripe sooner." "Are you kidding?" shouted the judge. "How can boiled corn grow and ripen?" All the people in the courtroom laughed. this seemed to have made the judge angry. The traveler wished he had not asked this lawyer. "What makes you think that boiled corn will grow in you fields?" asked the landlord, who thought that the lawyer was crazy. Then the lawyer asked him. "What makes you think chickens will hatch from boiled eggs?"

How come ~ ? : 왜 ? Why ? was held up ~ ing : ~하느라고 지체되다. sow : 파종하다. sow - sowed - sown cf) sow[sau] 암퇘지.  sew[sou] 꿰매다.( sew - sewed - sewn) Of course not : Of course  the corn is not ripe yet. This seemed to have made the judge angry : 판사를 화나게 했던 것 같다. who thought : 관계대명사 계속적 용법. What makes you think ...? = Why do you think ....?

"당신은 왜 재판에 늦었습니까?" 판사는 그에게 엄숙하게 물었다. "매우 죄송합니다." 그는 말했다. "저는 옥수수 밭에서 추수를 하느라고 늦었습니다." "당신이 옥수수 밭에서 수확을?" 하고 판사가 이상한 듯이 물었다. "옥수수는 아직 익지 않았는데." "물론 아니지요." 하고 변호사가 말했다. "저는 삶은 옥수수 두 자루를 파종했지요. 저는 그것이 더 빨리 익을 것이라고 생각했습니다." "농담하는 거요?" 판사가 고함쳤다. "어떻게 삶은 옥수수가 자라서 익는다는 말이오?" 법정의 모든 사람들이 웃었다. 이 일은 판사를 화나게 한 것 같았다. 여행자는 이 변호사에게 의뢰하지 않았어야 했는데 하고 생각했다. "어떻게 삶은 옥수수가 당신의 밭에서 자랄 거라고 생각했습니까?" 하고 그 여관 주인은 물었다. 그는 변호사가 미쳤다고 생각했다. 그러자 변호사는 그에게 물었다. "왜 당신은 삶은 계란으로부터 닭이 부화한다고 생각합니까?"

The judge understood the point the lawyer was trying to make. "Were your eggs boiled?" he asked the traveler. "Yes, Your Honor," answered the man. The greedy landlord was found guilty of lying and was fined ten dollars for each boiled egg - one hundred dollars in total. The greedy landlord tried to "count his chickens before they were hatched." After all, he had to pay a great price for his greed. The traveler thanked the lawyer for his wisdom. Then he hurried home, smiling.

The greedy landlord : 탐욕스러운(욕심많은) 여관주인. guilty of lying : 거짓말 한 죄. was fined : 벌금형을 받았다. in total : 합계로. After all : 결국 = At last. he hurried home, smiling : 미소를 지으며 집으로 서둘러 갔다. 부대상황의 분사구문.

판사는 변호사가 입증하려고 애쓰는 문제점을 이해했다. "당신의 달걀은 삶은 것이었습니까?" 라고 그는 여행자에게 물었다. "예, 판사님." 하고 그는 대답했다. 그 탐욕스러운 여관주인은 거짓말한 죄가 밝혀졌고 삶은 달걀 한 개당 10달러의 벌금, 합해서 100달러의 벌금형을 받았다. 그 탐욕스러운 여관 주인은 "알이 부화되기도 전에 병아리를 세려고" 했다. 결국 그는 자신의 탐욕에 대해 큰 대가를 지불해야 했다. 여행자는 변호사에게 그의 지혜에 대해 감사했다. 그리고 그는 웃으며 서둘러 집을 향해 갔다.

In-su   : I took half an hour to read it, but you did it in ten minutes.

In-suk  : Thanks. I found it very interesting and pleasant.

In-su   : What did you like most about the story.

In-suk  : The lawyer's wisdom and the judge's decision. What about you?

In-su   :The lawyer seemed to have a sense of humor, too.
