비슷한 의미의 부정적, 긍정적 표현

외국어를 배울 때 특히 어려운 것은 뉘앙스를 표현하는 겁니다.

같은 뜻으로 말하지만, 상대가 지금 부정적인 의미를 갖고 있는 것인지

긍정적인 의미인지 구분하기가 어렵습니다.

요즘 가르쳐주시는 영어 선생님은 이런 부분을 수업시간마다 특히 강조합니다.

언어는 본인의 감정과 생각을 표현하는 것이라는 것이지요.

맞는 말입니다. 집에 처박혀 있었다와 집에 있었다는 건 의미는 비슷하지만

상당히 다른 의도를 갖고 있는 것이지요.

수업 시간에 배운 것들을 대략 정리하였습니다.  

 

= ~하면서 집에 있었다.

I stay at home + ing / +Noun  (positive)

I'm struck at home + ing / +Noun  (negative)

 

= 자주 (very often)

From time to time, it goes on things like ~  (positive)

Tiem and again, I have blazing row with my parents about money.  (negative)   

 

= 꽤 쉽다

It's fairly straightfowrad.                       (positive)    <--> It's a little tricky.

It's straightfoward enough. (=too easy)    (negative)   

 

= 사실, 솔직히

In actual fact, I'm improving a lot these days.                         (positive)

To be perfectly honest, I'm not improving. I'm staying the same.   (negative)

 

= 농담하다

tell a joke = funny, appropriate, good humour    (positive)

crack a joke = not funny, inappropriate, bad humour (negative)

 

= 시간을 보내다

I spent the vast majority of Saturday + ing (positive)

I spent the best part of Saturday +ing       (negative)

 

= 의무를 다하다

On Saturday, I had to + V     : accepted obligation (positive)

On Saturday, I found myself having to  + V   :   disliked obligation (negative)

 

= 오래오래 기억될 것이다.

It will stay with me forever.       (positive)

It wll haunt me forever.             (negative)

 

It stands out as being + adj     (positive)     --    It stands out as being wonderful.  

It sticks out as being + adj       (negative)   --    It sticks out as being horrible.  

 

= 놀랬다

I'm surpised at ~    (positive)

I'm surpised by ~    (negative)

 

= 붐비다 crowded, busy는 가치가 없는 중립적 표현

(to be) buzzing with           (positive)    Seoul is buzzing with beautiful women.

(to be) swarming with        (negative)   In summer, Seoul is swarming with mosquito.
